This touching play was written to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the children's return to Guernsey following five years as evacuees in England.

It illustrates one of the many problems Guernsey wartime children faced during and after the war, that have largely gone unrecognised.

The central person in the play is Rosalind Le Page, who was seven years old when she lodged with a Gloucestershire couple.  Over the following five years she grew to love them almost feeling they were her real parents.

It is now November 1945, and Rosalind has moved back to Guernsey, living with her real parents, for four months and  Rosalind, her brother, her family and her wartime family face a challenging dilemma.

“Why should I not publish my diary? I have often seen reminiscences of people I have never even heard of, and I fail to see – because I do not happen to be a ‘Somebody’ – why my diary should not be interesting.”

So says Mr Charles Pooter who, with his dear little wife Carrie, has taken up residence at The Laurels, Brickfield Terrace, Holloway, in the hope and, indeed, the expectation of an idyllic and carefree life in the suburbs. But what with seemingly endless disputes with the local tradespeople, the constant intrusion of his friends Cummings and Gowing, the seemingly never-ending range of tasks and chores pertaining to their little home, an often less than satisfactory maidservant, the idle lifestyle of their son, Willie and the continual annoyances of the junior clerks at his office in the City, the idyll seems more of a distant hope than a reality.

And then there is the constant exasperation occasioned by a malfunctioning boot-scraper!

After the roaring success of last year’s chaotic romp through Around the World in 80 Days, Shepherd's Crook Productions is back with another fast-paced, unrehearsed, and utterly unpredictable one-act play!

This year, we’re diving into the delightfully daft world of Alan Ayckbourn’s Ernie’s Incredible Illucinations — a surreal comedy that blurs the line between imagination and reality.

Meet Ernie, an ordinary boy with an extraordinary mind. His vivid "illucinations" have a habit of springing to life — from marching soldiers to mysterious doctors and daring duels. Is it imagination, magic, or something else entirely? Either way, Ernie’s world is about to get very real... and very funny.

The show is directed by Laura Sheppard, an award-winning director known for her inventive, high-energy storytelling. She is joined in bringing this madcap experience to life by her Shepherd’s Crook Productions co-founder, actor and playwright Roger Niven, whose flair for character and comedy will be central to the mayhem on stage.
As always, the cast will be seeing the script for the first time, scripts in hand, ready to sight-read, switch roles on a pinhead, provide their own sound effects, and cobble together costume changes in real time. No one knows what's coming next — least of all the actors. It’s bonkers. It’s brave. It’s brilliantly fun. There will be an interval with refreshments to help everyone recover — cast and audience alike!

Following the success of The Speckled Band in 2024, Winton Players will be presenting another adaptation of one of Conan Doyle’s intriguing Sherlock Holmes stories. Aided, as ever, by the indefatigable Dr Watson, the sharp-eyed and sometimes caustic Consultant Detective will employ his unmatched powers of observation and deduction to unravel another seemingly impenetrable web of deception, subterfuge and criminality. With a range of characters from both the upper reaches and the dark under-belly of late Victorian society, you can be sure of plenty of twists and turns as Holmes proceeds imperturbably but inevitably to solve the case.

In this brilliant and powerful drama set in 1964, Sister Aloysius, a Bronx school principal, takes matters into her own hands when she suspects the young Father Flynn of improper relations with one of the male students.

Their play enjoyed huge success when first performed winning the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play and is the most decorated play on Broadway, with a total of 24 awards to its name.  

In 2008, the play was adapted as a feature film titled Doubt. It starred Meryl Streep as Sister Aloysius and Philip Seymour Hoffman as Father Flynn and was nominated for several Academy Awards.
